Overview:
Darkness is an unsettling thing. Even as adults, a room that felt normal with the lights on becomes suddenly tense when the switch flips off. It’s not the darkness that frightens us — it’s the thought of what might be hiding inside it. And spiritually, that is exactly the condition of this fallen world. Without Christ, we are surrounded by shadows we cannot see through and dangers we cannot discern. But when the Light steps in, everything changes.
The Light of the World
How did the world turn to such dark?
Why is the light now mocked, despised?
Where calling out evil seems so stark,
and lofty sin, with hatred, is prized?
A world in shadows fears no cost
when Christ’s pure love is thrown aside.
For darkness fights to keep us lost—
yet on the horizon, the Son will rise.
For Jesus is Light and our salvation;
why then should any of us fear?
The Lord is our refuge through every duration—
His radiance makes all shadows disappear.
In Him, there is no darkness at all;
in Christ, our courage is understood.
For with Jesus, every shadow falls,
and we are redeemed because He stood.
The Lord Jesus, in love, gave us sight;
He alone is worshipped—He is the Light.

The Light in a Fallen World
Darkness unsettles us more than we admit.
Think back to being a child — flipping off the basement light and sprinting up the stairs because it suddenly felt like something might be hiding behind you. Just moments earlier, the room was harmless, peaceful, familiar. But once the light vanished, the shadows seemed to come alive.
We aren’t truly afraid of darkness…
we’re afraid of what could be lurking inside it.
And in a quiet way, that mirrors our spiritual lives.
Before Jesus, we lived in that same uncertainty — walking through life without clarity, without direction, without truth to push back the shadows. We didn’t see the dangers, the lies, or the traps around us. We didn’t recognize how blind we truly were.
But then the Light came.
Jesus — the Light of the world — steps into the places we once feared and fills them with His presence.
And in Him, there is no darkness at all.
The moment we belong to Him, everything changes.
What once hid in the shadows loses its power.
What once intimidated us loses its voice.
What once chased us becomes exposed for what it truly is — nothing compared to Him.
His Light reveals.
His Light protects.
His Light calms the fears that used to control us.
And His Light reminds us that we are never walking alone.
Darkness can only exist where the Light is absent.
So when Jesus enters the room, enters the heart, enters the situation…
darkness has no choice but to flee.
You don’t need to run anymore.
You don’t need to fear what you cannot see.
You don’t need to guess what’s hiding in the shadows.
Because the Light of the world walks with you.
And in Him — you are safe.
Reflection Questions:
Where in your life have you allowed “shadows” to remain — areas you avoid bringing into the light of Christ?
What would change if you trusted Jesus to expose, heal, and guide those hidden places with His truth?
How does knowing that “darkness cannot overcome the Light” reshape your fears, your struggle with sin, or your view of spiritual warfare?
Closing Prayer:
Lord Jesus, You are the Light of the world. Shine into every shadow of my life.
Expose what needs to be seen, heal what has been hidden, and guide my steps with Your truth.
Keep me close to Your light so I never walk in darkness again.
In Your holy name, Jesus, I pray. Amen.
